Closest city to the trailhead:
Annacortes, Washington
Average distance of hike:
2.0 miles
Why do you recommend it?
Fairly easy to get to but a forgotten gem due to the close proximity to Deception Pass Bridge. Fantastic views of the Puget Sound. If you’re lucky, you can watch U.S. Navy Aircraft in the flight pattern.
What was most noteworthy?
The view from the top is incredible. Stay for the sunset, but make sure to bring a headlamp for the trip back to the car. There is a large Douglas fi r that has fallen and has been carved to resemble stairs along the loop route. There is a short cut to the view, which is only about a half mile. Otherwise take the loop. If you want a challenge, go around the loop and head to the top of the peak from the opposite side. Otherwise, finish the loop then head up the shortcut to the top.
Story continues after a quick message from our sponsor below.
Are there restrooms?
Yes, at the bridge parking lot.
Know before you go:
Discovery Pass is required or $10 to park. The parking lot is just as you cross the bridge on the right. Weekends can get crowded on the bridge. Most people are distracted by the bridge and won’t venture over to Goose Rock.
Where to celebrate after?
Brown Lantern in Annacortes.
How do you get there?
Take Hwy 20 south toward Whidbey Island. Parking is located where the bridge intersects with Whidbey Island. Head down the stairs and cross under the bridge. Trail is clearly marked.
