Closest city to the trailhead:
St Maries, Idaho
Average distance of hike:
1.8 miles one way.
Why do you recommend it?
This is a stunningly beautiful hike and it’s relatively close to Coeur d’Alene. I loved how the trail had a mixture of ups and downs with plenty of flats in between. It was a fun trail that was never boring. The views were absolutely mind-boggling, especially with the colors of autumn spreading out as far as the eye could see.
What was most noteworthy?
The lake of course! It is a quiet little lake nestled in the bottom of a steep and rugged bowl. There are plenty of fish and plenty of nice camp spots for those who are inclined to stay overnight.
Story continues after a quick message from our sponsor below.
Are there restrooms?
Yes, at the Sheep Spring Camp-ground and trailhead.
Know before you go:
There are bears, so be aware and bring protection. Also, there are several scree field crossings on the trail; strong and stable ankles are a huge plus.
Where to celebrate after?
Once back down to the interstate, drive another 5 minutes east and take the Kingston Exit and stop by the famous Snake Pit restaurant.

Crystal Lake – Google Map Location
Drive east from Coeur d’Alene on I-90 and take the Cataldo Exit. Turn left onto Latour Creek Road and stay on it for 25 miles. It will become Rochet Creek/Divide Road. Take Rochet till you arrive at Sheep Springs Camp. The trailhead is 25 yards to the left at the edge of a steep drop with expansive views to the north.
