Closest city to the trailhead:
West Glacier, Montana
Average distance of hike:
About 10 miles round trip, so allow plenty of time and make sure to pack plenty of water. A boat ride across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine (for a fee) will cut off a bit over 3 miles from the hike, but I prefer the trail especially around Lake Josephine.
Why do you recommend it?
It is as scenic of a hike as you will find anywhere in the world. There’s also a good spot for lunch: Upper Grinnell Lake, where the glacier is.
What was most noteworthy:
The jaw-dropping scenery!
Story continues after a quick message from our sponsor below.
Are there restrooms?
Yes, near the trailhead.
Know before you go:
Peak season will be busy but so worth the hike. Be prepared with the essentials including bear spray.
Where to celebrate after?
During the right season, around the campfire at any number of campgrounds. The closest is Many Glacier.
