Closest city to the trailhead:
Afton, Wyo.
Average Distance of hike:
1.5 miles
Why do you recommend it?
Geologic wonders such as this are few and far between. In fact there are only a handful of “periodic” or “intermittent” cold water springs known in the world. This one is the largest known so far. In the fall, the mixture of autumn colors, brisk mountain air, and a delightful hike are the perfect way to spend a couple of hours.
What was most noteworthy?
During late summer and fall, the spring stops flowing out of the mouth, tucked up in a vertically walled limestone canyon for a period of 10-20 minutes at a time. Then, after a deep gurgling bellows from within the earth, the spring comes to life and torrents of water roar down the several hundred foot tall cascades down into Swift Creek below.
Are there restrooms?
Yes
Story continues after a quick message from our sponsor below.
Know before you go:
Weather in Wyoming, just as in any mountainous area, can be unpredictable and dangerous. Plan your day accordingly and bring appropriate clothing and gear. Also, the final section of trail leading up to the mouth of the spring is extremely steep and slippery. Extreme caution should be taken if it is attempted
Where to celebrate after:
Roadhouse Pub & Eatery, Jackson Hole.
How do you get there?
From Idaho Falls, take Highway 26 East toward Palisades Reservoir and Alpine, Wyo. Once at Alpine Junction, continue South onto Hwy 89 to Afton, Wyo. Once in Afton, turn left onto Second Street and follow it for 5 miles to the end of the road and Periodic Spring Trailhead.
