Closest city to the trailhead:
Avery, Idaho
Average Distance of hike:
9 miles
Why do you recommend it?
This challenging trail is absolutely worth it for the most incredible 360-degree view of the St. Joe National Forest from a historic fire lookout tower.
What was most noteworthy?
Hiking that final pitch of the trail to see the fire lookout tower and the gorgeous view of the forest in all directions takes your breath away in more ways than one! And watch for the established mountain goat herd that inhabits the area.
Are there restrooms?
No
Know before you go?
There is no water along the trail so make sure to pack enough for you and your pups. You will be climbing and descending in both directions on this hike, but despite feeling like the hike out is all uphill, the stunning cedar forest trail makes it all worth it.
Where to celebrate after?
TFP’s in Avery
