Closest city to the trailhead:
Salt Lake City, Utah
Average Distance of hike:
3 – 3.5 miles round trip
Why do you recommend it?
Despite the rugged nature of the Wasatch Range, this hike is a perfect introduction to hiking in a high mountain environment with the reward of stunning views, a pleasant trail, and an alpine lake to enjoy at the top. Plus, it is a short drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon from downtown Salt Lake City.
What was most noteworthy?
Hiking in a giant aspen grove during peak fall colors was nothing short of spectacular. The near-constant views across the canyon over to the towering peaks above Solitude Ski Resort meant there were no boring moments on this hike. The mellow nature of this hike is also appealing for those with children or for folks who aren’t used to the high altitude and don’t want a super challenging hike. My brother-in-law and I hiked it with a 4-year- old.

How do you get there?
From Salt Lake City: Travel south and east to Big Cottonwood Canyon. Drive 13 miles up the canyon almost to Solitude Ski Resort. Look for a small trailhead on the north side of the road with a large stone sign. There is no official parking lot. Park on either side of the road in the gravel. Ensure that your vehicle is not double parked and is not on the roadway.
