Rustic has long been a popular design theme in North Idaho homes. But more and more, builders are incorporating more modern touches and often combining the two styles.
When building a three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath in the gated Rimrock Meadows community in Hayden, Selkirk Construction went with a bold design.
“We tried something a little more modern and edgy in this one that focused on some newer touches,” said Heidi LaBolle, interior designer and project coordinator for custom home builder.
The 3,156-square-foot home received top Parade of Home awards in the Cedar category for best curb appeal, best kitchen, and best use of innovation.

The open layout of the living room, dining room and kitchen was designed to be inviting and welcoming. And clever touches were added like underlit floating shelves in the living room with color-changing LED lighting.
In the kitchen, you’ll find recessed lighting plus pop-out outlets on the counters, along with an impressive island. Parade guests especially enjoyed opening what looked like a skinny closet door and discovering a surprisingly spacious walk-in pantry behind it.
All appliances are ENERGYSTAR certified, and the home also has a high HERS rating for its home energy.
LaBolle said Selkirk Construction really focused on integrating smart features as much as possible, including video, with surround sound audio, as well as control of shades, wireless security and other features.
The home is considered one story but there is a bonus second-level with a central room, full bath and a nook that could house electronic components, games or even a small library. The upstairs space could be house a home theater, rec room or gaming area.
Owners can easily access a three-car garage and a large laundry area/mud room. Windows are prominent in every room, including the front office space.
Backyard landscaping includes a tranquil waterfall and rock garden, which can be enjoyed year-round from a covered back porch. The master bedroom also can access the backyard and has a comfy outdoor seating area and firepit.
“We tried to make it beautiful on the outside as well as the inside,” LaBolle said. N
