The Pacific Northwest is known for its abundance of gorgeous naturescapes and wildlife. As poet Henry David Thoreau once said, “The taste for the beautiful is most cultivated out of doors.”
Landscape Architect: Alderwood Landscaping
Nestled in the mountains overlooking Newman Lake in Washington, this stunning craftsman home is surrounded by beautiful scenery and 360-degree views that provide ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.
From the glow of dawn over the valley, to the burning embers of sunset glimmering on the lake’s reflection – this mountain retreat showcases its surroundings no matter the time of day or the season thanks to its resort quality landscaping.
The Smith family worked with Alderwood Landscaping to create a cohesive landscape design that would maximize their large outdoor space without blocking the lake and mountain views, as well as complementing the craftsman aesthetic and intrinsic architecture of the newly built, three-story home.
“The entire project was custom-designed for the family in order to achieve their goals for the space and to blend with the style of the home,” said Brooke Peterson of Alderwood Landscaping.
The front yard landscaping displays the home’s grandeur and sweeping territorial views with an expansive paver driveway and bubble water features that line the home’s entryway.
Large, hand-placed basalt columns and slabs work with the landscape’s natural grade to act as a retaining wall, while basalt steps lead the transition from the upper entryway to the lower entertainment and pool area.
The large water feature is a unique focal point in the backyard landscaping. Basalt columns and steps provide a backdrop for the water that cascades from the top of the columns to a pond with negative edge below, adding a luxurious aesthetic and a visual link to the large swimming pool.
Alderwood Landscaping coordinated the outdoor pavers and the pool with the home’s interior style to provide a seamless transition and a sense of continuity between the different entertaining spaces.
“The lower-level entertaining space has doors that open up to the exterior, creating a natural outdoor/indoor transition,” said Peterson. “We centered the pool in front as a dynamic intro to the backyard.”
A sunken fire pit on the opposite side of the pool optimizes the lake views without inhibiting the line of sight elsewhere in the landscape.
Alderwood chose plantings and landscaping elements based on native plant species to create an authentic, natural environment where plants will thrive.
“The clients asked us for a landscape that looked luxurious, blended in with the home and natural mountainscape while providing plenty of entertaining space and preserving their views,” said Peterson. “In the end, the goal was achieved, and we are so happy our clients are thrilled with the results.” N
