Why do you recommend it?
Seeing a single waterfall on a hike is memorable. At Silver Falls State Park, you can reach 10, more than one per mile in a hike that takes about a half day, going at a leisurely pace. Plus, you can walk behind four of the waterfalls.
What was most noteworthy?
The main parking lot once was part of the town of Silver Falls City. At its height, the town had houses, sawmills, general stores, a hotel, church, dance hall and bar.
Are there restrooms?
Yes
Know before you go?
Start the hike at the South Falls entrance to the park. It has lots of parking. Arrive around 7:30 a.m., especially if you are there on a summer weekend. At that time, the trail will be less crowded. Print the paper trail map from the Oregon Parks website and bring it with you. It’s an important resource. Cell service can be spotty after you descend into the canyon where the waterfalls are.
Where to celebrate after?
South Falls Cafe
How do you get there?
Head to Salem, Ore., on Interstate 5. Take Highway 22 east to Oregon Highway 214 or Silver Falls High- way. Follow Silver Falls Highway to the south entrance of the park. It’s about 20 miles. N
